The Saints looking to continue its solid early season form when it took on its arch rival University Blues at a blustery May Rd on Sunday afternoon. The Saints went into the game missing a couple of key midfielders which allowed a number of the clubs talented young brigade of Liam Ackland , Michael Boyce , Josh & Sam Mckenzie to step up and taste senior football .
With a favourable breeze University got off to a flier in the first quarter kicking 4 goals to nil with the Saints having no answer Uni’s taller forwards and some strong marking from Taungakaivai. It looked like being a long day for the Saints but slowly they worked their way back into the game with the backline led by Jarrod Wallace and run from Michael Boyce began to rebound Uni’s attacks.
The Saints then outscored Uni for the next two quarters with perpetual motion Lewis Hurst, Marcus Jones, Ian Francis and Aaron Percy getting the ball moving into the Saints forward line. A fantastic fighting effort had the Saints down by only 14 points going into the last quarter. The first five minutes proved the turning point with the Saints missing a couple of goal scoring opportunities to the level up the game. Uni then managed to settle with its more experienced players stepping up and converting its opportunities in front of goal. A couple of late Uni goals blew out a score line that was not a true reflection of the competitiveness of the game. A full strength Saints line up combined with the ever improving young brigade could see a very different score line next time around.
