Match Report Seniors

After an impressive display from the Reserves, the seniors ran out in relatively poor conditions for footy aiming to produce a similar result

The Saints Seniors welcomed back Morgan Jones, Peter Boyce and the indestructible Dave Kay, but lost Alex Van Son and Richard Drew through injury/time commitments prior to the game.

The first quarter started well for the Saints kicking into a mild breeze towards the change rooms’ end. Mike Tagg was getting the first hand on the ball in the ruck and the midfield of Marcus Jones, Lewis Hurst, Matt Kemp and Morgan Jones continued to drive the ball forward throughout the whole quarter. Liam Ackland in his first year of senior football was creating plenty of space and finding plenty of the ball in the forward line and became the main focal point up front. His first goal brought up the third of the quarter for the Saints.

Quarter time: Saints 3-3 to 0.0

The second quarter turned into an ugly affair as the Raiders went defensive and played a close checking style of play and didn’t allow the Saints to get into an attacking flow. Some poor kicking into the forward lines also aided the Raiders and allowed their defence to keep the Saints goalless for the quarter. The Saints defence was rock solid throughout the quarter and was being well led by Jarrad Wallace and Andy Mck and Azza was finding plenty of the ball in his “custom made” position.

Half time: Saints 3-6 to 0.0

The move of the electrifying Peter Boyce into Centre Half Forward opened up the game for the Saints as the forward line went small, older and quicker?? and our midfield got back on top, with the assistance of Henry and Dave Kay on the wings. The delivery of the ball into the forward line was much better as evidenced by Pete Jenson hitting Fairweather 20m out from goal and the subsequent goal bringing up a six goal lead going into the final quarter. In a rather bizarre incident, assistant coach Steve Fairweather got sent off as three Raiders defenders ran in and started pushing and shoving him!

Three Quarter Time: Saints 5-9 to 0.2
The final quarter was a better quarter kicking with the breeze as the Saints kicked three goals to give us a final winning margin of 58 points. Peter Boyce brought up his third goal of the half and proved to be a key factor in the second half dominance.

The whole defence played a strong game and may not get a lot of votes in the AAFL Best and Fairest, but played superbly as a team within a team. The defence was beautifully led by Jarrad Wallace who managed to kick a goal in the last quarter! How did that happen??? Andy Mck, Aran Percy and Azza all played solid games as well.

Mike Tagg, Lewis Hurst and the Jones boys did well throughout the game and got more of the ball as the game wore on. In attack, Liam Ackland and Peter Boyce both had strong games and provided plenty of head aches for the Raiders Defence.

Best Players: Jarrad Wallace, Lewis Hurst, Mike Tagg, Liam Ackland, Andrew McKenzie, Aran Percy

Match Report Reserves

A massive win this weekend for the Mt Roskill Saints Reserves winning 106 to 8 over Manurewa. All players deserved a pat on the back after giving all four quarters their all. This displayed to all our guys just what they are capable of as Manurewa were not a team to be taken lightly. I think each and every player should draw confidence from this week’s win and apply this to their next games. We are certainly not lacking in talent or fitness, believing in our teams ability will have us winning more and more in the coming weeks and take us through to the Grand Final. Job well done fella’s.
