SENIOR GRADE
Mt Roskill Saints v Takapuna Eagles
Seniors 7.18 (60) v 3.4 (22)

The Saints went into the game with the loss of three key playmakers, Dave Kay (broken arm), and Aaron Napier and Liam Ackland (unavailable) and coming into the side were Dan R and James for their first senior games.

What started out as a good day for footy soon turned ugly. As the match started the rain started, and it progressively got heavier as the game wore on and the skill level deteriorated accordingly from both sides.

The Saints played some attractive footy in the first quarter, quite often bringing the ball into the forward lines with waves of runners and hitting forward targets in some pretty poor conditions. Kempy and Steve worked well together and Henry and Boycey were finding plenty of space. Mike Boyce relished playing in the forward lines for the first time this year and brought up the first goal of the game. Lewis Hurst was winning the ball out of centre and the Saints went into the first break with a slight lead.

The second quarter was a scrappy affair. The Saints couldn’t score a goal early even though we peppered the goalmouth frequently. The only result was several behinds and a frustrated forward line. The Saints backline was solid again and rebounding everything that came their way. The Eagles put on two goals late in the quarter as some of our midfield got tired, and evened out the score-line at half time. Mike Tagg was beginning to dominate in the ruck against a taller opponent and he was well supported by the midfield of Morgs, Marcus, Lewis and Pete Jenson.

Quite often this year, the Saints have played our best footy in the third quarter. Pete Jenson started to come into his own in this quarter and alongside Lewis Hurst was providing plenty of ball into the forward line. Once again some missed opportunities in front of goal didn’t help the cause, but it was obvious to see that the Saints were starting to get on top in most positions around the ground. A solitary goal to Wes Allen, resting in the forward pocket with a dodgy hammy, was the only major for the term. An unfortunate injury to Fireman in the third quarter placed an even darker cloud over the day.

The final quarter finally produced some of the goals that had been threatening to come all day for the Saints. Goals to Junior, Dan Robinson (in his first senior game) and Sam finished the game off well, in tough conditions.
The backline, particularly Andrew McKenzie was rebounding everything in this term and enabled the Saints to run out comfortable winners in the end.

A final score line of 7.18 (60) to 3.4 (22) indicated the Saints dominance around the ground and with some accurate kicking could have seen a real blow out. To have had 25 scoring shots in tough conditions was also pleasing from the Saints team against a solid opponent.

Best Players: Lewis Hurst, Pete Jenson, Mike Tagg, Peter Boyce, Andrew McKenzie and Jarrad Wallace.

RESERVE GRADE
Mt Roskill Saints v Takapuna Eagles
Reserves 5. 7 31 v 2. 5 17

Round five, Sunday 23rd of September saw another fantastic victory to the Mt Roskill Saints Reserves team over the Takapuna Eagles. There was a great turn out from Mt Roskill with a total of 22 team players keen to get out on the field. Mt Roskill dominated every quarter working hard to keep possession of the ball in wet conditions. It was evident that most players have a good grasp of the games basics and this coupled with our level of fitness and desire to win is going to take us through to this year’s premiership.

As we move on the second half of the season it is time for us to focus on the next level of footy. Area’s of our game that we can work on is accuracy when passing both by hand and drop kick. We all know the feeling when you’re ready to receive a pass and it falls a few feet away from you. Thoughts of being pounded by some 110kilo old boy runs through your mind. It’s time for these passes to hit us on the chest. This will speed up the game in further boost that confidence.

It’s great to see us not only manning up now when on defence but supporting our team mates when we have off loaded a pass. We train with the seniors each night and need to take what they learn and put it into our weekend games. Your job hasn’t finished once you have got rid of the ball and your job has only just started if your mate has it. Think about how each and every one of us can be the player of the match. Each game the coach is choosing the best six players so at the end of the season there is the fairest and best award waiting to be won.

Dan Robinson was give the chance to play for the seniors this week and he scored a massive goal as well as making many tackles and passes that met their man. Well done Dan and let this be an example to all Reserves that you all have the chance to make it to the senior’s grade.

Thanks very much to all the guy’s that volunteered to play for Takapuna, it’s a pain having to play for the opposition but it’s better than half our team sitting on the bench. I will share the pleasure around and try to get those that do a half for the opposition on for the other half of the Reserves game.

Job Well done this week guy’s!
