Round 7 saw the Mt Roskill Saints up against the North Shore Tigers. After a narrow 1 goal win in Round 1, a keenly contested and physical game was expected. Mt Roskill had six senior players out mainly due to injury and the Tigers were out to make amendments for their Round 1 loss.

From the very first tip off Mt Roskill Ruckman Mike Tagg was dominant winning the majority of ruck contests out of the middle. The Auckland Buccaneers quartet of Marcus Jones, Morgan Jones, Pete Jensen and Tagg dictated play in the centre providing impetus and run. Pete Boyce was in fine form finding plenty of space out wide and delivering well into the forward line and to strong marking options by newly discovered full forward Matt Kemp along with Henry Carracher, Liam Ackland and Adam Brunt.

The team welcomed back Craig “Eddie” Edwards from a break. Two hip replacements couldn’t hold back Eddie and he managed to display his form of old by sneaking a well deserved goal. Other notable players who stepped up include Mark Johnson and Wade Burfoot who both made a solid impact from the interchange.

The weather was perfect for the running game that the Saints were using. Quick hand passes, decisive running and accurate kicking around the ground allowed the Saints to steer to a comfortable lead at the end of half time.

After weathering a brief fight back from the Tigers at the beginning of the third quarter, the Saints pulled away in the final quarter to a 8-12-60 to 5-8-38 win. Kemp top scored with 2 goals with the rest of the gaols being well spread amongst the team. Pete Jenson played some of his best football of 2007 and warranted the best on ground spot. The Saints really stepped up this week and asserted control and composure for most of the game. What was most impressive was the first year and younger players stepping up to the senior level with such success.

The style of football employed by the Saints in Round 7 will lead itself to a good base for the rest of the season and will provide something for University to think about in the build up to Round 8.
