Round 7 Match Report

Seniors

From the Uni game we welcomed back Henry, Kempy, Junior and Rich Drew for the game against Manurewa at Mountfort Park. Also BJ & Aaron played their first game for the year for the Saints, but we still went into the game without Aran Percy, Lewis Hurst and Pete Jenson.

In very good conditions for footy the Saints started well with some good forays into the forward line. Taggy was getting first hand on the ball in the ruck and the new centre pattern was working well, although, the Raiders were still making it difficult to get the ball cleanly out of centre. Peter Boyce & Liam went down after hard knocks, but we still went into the first quarter break up by three goals to one.

The Raiders started strongly in second quarter and were making it tough with their negating tactics as well as short passing deep in the back line. The Saints dropped their intensity at the mid point of the term as some of the midfielders weren’t pushing back to assist the defence. Luckily, some changes brought some fresh legs into the midfield and the Saints were able to put some late goals on the board in the quarter through Alex and Adam and went into the break with a five-goal lead.

The last half saw some strong play from the Saints, as we used the ball cleanly and shared the ball around. The Saints looked to kick to free targets in the forward line and Alex was providing strong leads and Mark Johnson came into play in the second half at Centre Half Forward.
A much cleaner second half from the Saints where we kicked ten goals showed the level we need to strive for, for the whole game over the next two weeks leading into the finals.

As a team we performed solidly and there were strong performances from Taggy (in the ruck), Wade (in defence), Sam (on the wing) and Adam having a run on the ball. Alex kicked four goals (and a relatively easy shot on the three quarter time buzzer would have provided a good five goal effort from him) and Morgan Jones kicked three! (How did that happen?)

Nutty played his last game for the Saints as he is heading off to the Gold Coast, and all the Saints wish him the best with his new adventures. The script was written beautifully for him as the clock ticked down in the game and he marked about 20 metres out in front of goal. He carefully went back to take the kick and kick his final goal for the Saints, only to kick it into the
man on the mark!

Reserve Grade

A great win by the Saints reserves team who welcomed back experienced players Brendan Hines, Jason Snashall and Peter Boyce whom along with Liam Ackland helped strengthen the ranks.
A good even team effort with greatly improved and outstanding games from Chad Bedford, Dan Munro, Aiden Hurley and James Simmons.
All our under 17 players have really come along over the past month to form the backbone of our reserve grade team. The team needs to win both it’s final two games to cement a place in the finals.
We started off strong employing all skills learned from the seasons training sessions and charged on through winning all four quarters.
At the start of the match we called upon all players to be accountable for their own performance and support each other and it was evident this had sunk in. At any one point in time there were at least two Roskill players on the ball supporting each other with big sheppard’s and good quality hand balls.
On too many occasions in past we have felt our job was done when the ball left our hands and this lead to poor passing leaving our team mate to pick up crumbs. This weekend we all saw the benefit of a good chest pass and how capable we are of delivering a fast paced game. When we did delivere a bad pass we ran on to put in the Sheppard for our mates. There were Great performances from all players not just the usuals and we all need to take this game away with us and remember what we are capable of. We need to deliver this type of performance each week, not just from the third quarter but from the moment we set foot on the ground.
Well done Reserves.
