Seniors
A very gutsy win by The Saints in wet and blustery conditions last Sunday at The War Memorial Reserve May Rd. We started off in fine form kicking four goals to zip with the wind in the first quarter, then kicking the first goal against the wind in the second. The Magpies hit back towards the end of the second quarter kicking four quick goals.
The second half was a real slog with the conditions getting the better of both teams. The Magpies had the better of the third quarter and being only 5 points down at the break. Coming home with a strong breeze they would’ve fancied their chances.
The Saint however hit back bravely scoring the only goal of the quarter to run out winners by 8 points.
The efforts in the first and last quarters were outstanding, the last quarter in particular, as the team re-discovered that making the effort to be first to the contest, being brave and putting your head over the ball is everything in the conditions we encountered on the weekend.
The McKenzie trio, along with BBJ (Big Ben Jansen) were great down back with Auckland reps Mike Tagg, Marcus Jones and Morgan Jones in everything in the mid-field. Lewis Hurst and Pete Jensen, returning from injury, with a good hard game under their belts.
Heading into the last round the senior team is second on the ladder.

Reserves
Our reserves team are really suffering the effects of the extended injury list to our senior squad as well as having a few bigger bodied, experienced players such as big Rich A and Bush Newlove unavailable. Notwithstanding this the team battled bravely in terrible conditions last Sunday. Leading the way were under 17 and under 15 players James Simons, Andrew Horsley, Ben Kairua and Aiden Hurley who along with Dan Munro and Dan Robinson attacked the ball with great courage despite being targeted by their much larger opponents.
I hope we are able to entice a few retired senior players back to assist in the development of this fantastic young squad who show great courage each week competeing against bigger and more experienced opponents.
Well done guys, despite the loss!
Heading into the last round the reserves team is fifth on the ladder. One game plus percentage out of the top four.
