The Mt Roskill Saints qualified for their forth Grand Final appearance in 5 years with a hard fought 4 point win over The North Shore Tigers.
Some woeful first half kicking both at goals and around the ground saw the Saints 12 points down at the main break. The team had kicked 8 points straight at half time!!
A rare spray from coach Ian Francis at the main break saw the team kick five goals straight in the third quarter and be 5 points in front at three quarter time.
It was a real slog in the final term with both teams having their chances to win the game before the Saints narrowly scrapped home.
Whilst the windy conditions may have contributed to the generally poor skill level compared to the previous week, the half and full time scores seem to tell a different story. The team kicked 8 points straight in the first half compared to seven goals one behind in the second half.
Last Sundays extremely physical clash will hopefully have The Saints well prepared for another crack at University this Sunday at Parrs Park Oratia
The Saints and The Tigers have fashioned quite a unique finals rivalry over the past twelve years. Since 1996 there has only been three occasions that the teams have not meet at finals time with The Saints winning 5 times to The Tigers four. The Tigers generally having the wood over The Saints between 1996 to 2001 before the tables being turned in recent times.
Since 2000 the teams have met six times and only once has the difference been more than one goal, that occasion was the 2005 grand final when the Saints just got home by seven points.
