A good first up effort from the Saint’s considering the difficult build up that almost all clubs have faced pre-season.

The game yesterday saw the introduction of many new faces, re introduction of a couple (Nashy and Munty) as well as welcoming back Marcus, Liam and Lewi from International Cup duties. This combined with the disrupted pre season training was highlighted slightly through the disjointed nature of our play; however, there were many pleasing signs and when we were able to get our game style going it looked good in patches.

The game started off in the best possible fashion with Co-Captain Lewis Hurst clearing the ball from the very first bounce and passing to Dion Nash who managed to kick a goal on the run in the first thirty seconds of the match. This wasn’t the trend for the remainder of the quarter as the Saints midfield worked hard to bring the ball into the forward line, to be repelled quite often by the Waitakere defence who were dropping numbers back. Dave Kay was finding plenty of the ball in the first quarter and Jones, Johnson and Hurst were combining well through the centre.

The second quarter started off in much the same vein with the Saints driving the ball into the forward line through some effective work on the attacking wing by Munty. Nashy was finding plenty of space and managed a goal as did John Wall in his first game for the club. An excellent mark by Brendan Clark in his first game was perhaps overshadowed by the resulting kick that didn’t quite register on the scoreboard! A lapse towards the end of the quarter allowed the Magpies back into the game and the Saints went into half time only a couple of goals up.

A quick reshuffle and another strong start to the third quarter restored some respectability. Players through the midfield were getting their hands on the ball and Kempy was providing plenty of run from the backlines, whilst Kay received the “FULL NELSON” which went undetected by the umpire. (Who did a great job on his own in difficult circumstances)

Liam Ackland was thrust into the middle with some run with roles and performed admirably. This was capped off with a long goal in the final quarter from a nice set up by Marcus Jones, which blew the score out to five goals. The final quarter was also an opportunity for us to play some new players to the club in their first game – Jacob and Ian and they performed well when giving the chance.

Best Players – Lewi, Kempy, Nashy, Liam and Munty.

Goalkickers – Nash 4, Ackland 2, Van Son 2, Munt 1, Kay 1, Wall 1.
