Seniors
Mighty Mt Roskill Saints versus the Willing Waitakere Magpies
On the back of two big wins expectations were high for the Saints going into this sixth round match, however a warm day and a committed Waitakere side put paid to any thoughts of another easy victory.
The first quarter was a hard fought affair, where poor execution in the attacking half meant ‘The Saints’ squandered a number of opportunities to convert, this was compounded by the early loss of rookie star Liam Ackland with a leg injury.
The talk at the break demanded greater communication and a more direct approach to the goal square. Lewis Hurst in particular leading the charge making a number of breaks and providing good ball to the likes of Kuss, Nash and Boyce, the latter in particular scavenging like a seagull on red bull, to help pull Roskill clear by four goals at half time.
Whether it was the heat or the overly sweet snakes handed out at the break no one can say but the third quarter started badly and only got worse. Poorly directed kicks combined with players getting themselves in front of the play and not working to get back on defence allowed Waitakere to steal a march on the Saints and draw to within three goals by the final leg
Going into the final quarter both teams would have felt the game was within their grasp, however with pride and the all important win on the line the call for more commitment was answered by the saints in spades, with Jones and Voight dominating the centre, Hick and Munt razor like on the edges and Janson and McKenzie strong from the rear, a sincere effort from the entire side was produced.
Goal after goal (five in total to Waitakere zero) backed by aggressive tackling and commitment over the ball saw the Saints put together one of their best quarters of the year, one that will need to be replicated over the coming weeks as we enter the business end of the season.

Reserves
The reserves recorded their fifth win from six starts overcoming The Magpies by 24 points. With 14 members of the team either first year or under 18 including four having either their first or second game of AFL football it was another great win for the team.
Some great recruits have come to the club in the past couple of weeks with Grayson Hart, Chris Hilder and Jolon Bentley all in our best players. The team also has that touch of experience with 2005 premiership players Aaron Napier and Rich Horsley providing plenty of run through the middle.
Jesse Maio did a great job up forward and Billy Bedford likewise down back. Billy’s improvement has seen him not look out of place in the senior team where he has doubled up and played the last three games
Is was a great turn out of reserves players on the weekend and there has been clear improvement in each quarter the team has been able to play together.
As with the seniors the next two weeks will be even more of a challenge, which I’m sure, all the players are looking forward to.
