Sunday 2nd Nov 2008 was a warm sunny day at May Road, with only a slight cross-field breeze meaning perfect conditions for the clash between the Saints and the Uni Blues senior sides. The Blues started well and managed to dominate the first quarter with a lead of around 5 goals. However the Saints were not prepared to lie down, and took the second quarter as their own, with a much better work rate around the ground. Johnno won the ruck contests all day, and wore through all the ruckmen Uni could put up against him. The midfielders including Voigty, Lewi and Lex were able to get more of the ball and also begin to shut down the easy handpass game the Blues were playing. This also took some of the pressure off the Saints backline, who were playing the game of their lives, marshalled by Jarrad, they were constantly repelling the Blues attacks and shutting down their major players. The forward line also picked up the fight, and made sure that the ball stayed in their area until it had gone through the big sticks. Some great marks by Dave Kuss were inspirational, and Nashy couldn't do a thing wrong as he smashed through the Uni defences and booted several goals on the run. As the half time siren/whistle/yell went up there was only a goal in it, and it was anyone's game.

Unfortunately, as has been the Saints wont a bit lately, the intensity dropped in the third quarter and Uni was able to maximise on some quick turn-around balls. They managed to extend the lead by a few goals, but this was clawed back towards the end of the quarter. The final quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle with both teams tiring in the heat. In the end, the Saints couldn't quite make up that goal and a bit difference and the Blues won by 11 points. Both teams will certainly have been left with something to think about for their next meeting. The Saints have a lot to take from the game, the team as a whole played perhaps one of their better games of the season, even when behind on the scoreboard, the players held their heads high and showed that they were never out of it.

The very youthful (apart from Twitchey and Forrest) and inexperienced Saints reserves grade team really took it to their more experienced rivals before going down by 14 points.

Outstanding prospects and better players were Angus Cameron (playing his first game), Ben Hick (first season), Chris Hilder (forth game), Ben Richards (second game) and Grayson Hart (third game).

Ben won the ball from the ruck all day, but we didn't capitalise on this and win enough ball from the centre.
There were many great passages of play with the small guys, Zac and Chad, leading the charge with some great hand passes and crumbing of the ball at ground level which lead to an awesome goal by young Chad.

We had more than our fair share of possession but the opposition through their experience used the ball better, got past our defence and scored too many easy goals.

The new boys certainly made their presence felt with some big tackles and I'm sure there are some sore guys from both teams today.

The play of the day has to go to Chris Newlove, who was given a free kick right in front 25 meters out and rather than going for goal passed the ball to Brian Twittchet, who had 5 Uni guys around him. Brian finished it off with a great goal.

If the boys can gel together in the next couple of weeks and get to training regularly there is no reason why the 14-point margin to the competitions top team cannot be bridged.

In one of the funnier moments of the season, after some light hearted banter between the two reserve grade teams, somehow the Blues lads found themselves locked in the visitors changing sheds. Luckily a key could be found otherwise they might still be there!!
