After I finished my career at the Mount Isa Wombats U12's as a ranging on-baller and before I began my current job as Mount Roskill Roving Reporter I dabbled in talent-scouting (not for any team in particular, I just enjoyed watching kids from afar) and on Sunday the scout in me returned. I was sitting on the lush grass of Gloucester Park watching the M.R.S reserves game when out the corner of my eye shone a bright light. But when I put my blue-blockers on I realised it wasn’t a light - it was the legs of Brendan Hines. While I felt a searing pain as the retina began detaching from my eye I couldn’t look away as what I saw was so beautiful. The next 30 minutes unfolded into a spectacle of Hines magic. He kicked two monster goals, a snap shot from around the corner, and had multiple knees-on-shoulder “speccy” marks. The latest news from the Saints camp is that he has been offered the biggest contract in Saints history to play out the season with the seniors.
With only 17 men to take the park and Takapuna scoring first, things didn’t look good for the Saints. But just as doubt crept into my mind Andy "Mac-daddy" Mac turned up. He had accidently shown up 15 minutes before the game and had to quickly get in his car and leave so he could make his usual grand entrance. From there things steadily improved. As usual Tabe "Boo Boo" Voigt faked an injury better than my missus could, so he could sit in the pocket all day and kick goals. The first quarter showed only 6 points in it to the Saints, but over the next two quarters the Mount men stamped their authority on the game. The big move was moving the wounded Dave "stilts" Kuss up to full forward. He didn’t move more than a meter all day but damn did he take some marks. The Saints moved the score line out to over 20 points by the end of the game securing them a place in the finals. Next week they take on the bottom end of the competition, Manurewa away. If the Saints can string together 3 wins in a row, they will be able to bask in glory not seen for four years. Roving Reporter out.
In other news the Saints brotherhood would like to wish Liam "Ouch" Ackland all the best for his travels - do us proud, show those Glenelg pooftas what a bit of Roskill feels like. And remember - "one in the hand is two in the bush".
Roving Reporters Best On Ground
1 point - Peter "File" Boyce - every time he took a mark, he was heard muttering "yea, its Peter-time"
2 points - Tabe "My wife" Voigt - fragile as a flower but hell he can play cant he?
3 points - Brendan "Shine" Hines - someone get this man some Roskill socks and make him captain, vice captain, coach and water boy. He’s that good.
SUPER SAINTS SIT DOWN OFTHE WEEK - LIAM ACKLAND
This week we lost one of our finest Saints. Liam "Last quarter" Ackland has gone to Glenelg, Australia to further his career in a boy band known as "Honey Pots". Liam grew up as a tennis prodigy, but after a falling out with his coach threw the game away to the horror and dismay of his family. He tried in vain to find a new sport to excel at - darts, deep sea diving and Connect Four. None of these seemed to go anywhere until he stumbled upon AFL. After having a "sleep-over" with some friends from school, the boys headed down to May Road to play catch-and-kiss. But the Saints were short of a few players and according to Greg "The myth" Cairns decided to ask the "cheerful little blonde fellow" if he wanted a run. The rest is history as Liam pranced to greatness, making the M.R.S seniors, NZu20 and the NZ Falcons in the space of a few short years. But in a terrible twist of fate, Liam decided to once again leave the game that promised so much. Under the cover story of playing U18's for Glenelg, Liam tried out for a boy band and was chosen as the seventh and final member of "Honey Pots". While there has been an outcry of criticism regarding their lip syncing no-one can deny there popularity in the U14 female demographic. Their singles "Bite My Neck Baby" and "Ask Your Mum If You Can Stay" have been huge hits in Pakistan. Keep you ears peeled for their debut album "Dry Humping ‘til Midnight" in stores Dec 09.
R.R - So Liam, are you excited about playing for Glenelg?
L.A - Kind of, yeah heaps, but nah dunno, he he he.
R.R - Okay then Liam, who’s been your biggest influence?
L.A - Lewis Hurst he he he, I love him, I tell some people my name is Lewis sometimes... And I stalk his wife he he he.
R.R - For f**ks sake... Ummmmm okay Liam, what’s been your best memory playing at M.R.S ?
L.A - I know! I know! I know! When I kicked a goal against Uni. It was 50, no 60, no 70 meters. Did you see it? Did ya?
R.R - I don’t think so... Anyway how are the Honey Pots going?
L.A - They're great, yay, I learnt a cool dance the other day he he he wanna see? It goes like this...
R.R - I didn’t sign up for this... stop dancing Liam, this is ridiculous. Get Out Please.
